Daniel Hudson Burnham was born in Henderson, New York in 1846 and commenced practice in Chicago in 1873 in partnership with John Wellborn Root, who had been a fellow draughtsman in the office of Carter, Drake & Wight until that time. The practice of Burnham & Root lasted until Root's death in 1891. Thereafter Burnham practised alone until 1896 when he founded the firm of D H Burnham & Company, with Ernest R Graham, E C Shanklin and Charles Atwood the other partners. Burnham remained in charge of the firm until his death in 1912.
