Bio Notes :
The practice of brothers Lake and James Grewar Falconer was founded in Blairgowrie in the early 1880s. A branch office was opened in Fort William before 1900 and then another at 22 Alexandra Place, Oban, which became the main office. Most of their practice was estate work, their buildings being in a lightweight harled idiom with half-timbered gables. Lake Falconer's son, Lake Falconer Junior, was born at Blairgowrie on 16 June 1882 and educated at Dundee High School and University College, Dundee, and was an apprentice in the Blairgowrie office under Lake Senior from 1898 to 1902, remaining there as assistant until 1910 when he moved to James G Falconer's Fort William and Oban offices. He was admitted LRIBA on 24 June 1912, his proposers being the Aberdeen architects John Ross McMillan, Arthur Hay Livingstone Mackinnon and George Watt. By 1914 Lake Senior and James G had both retired as 'Who's who in Architecture' 1914 lists only Lake Junior, based at Oban.
During the First World War Lake Junior served with the Royal Artillery in Egypt, Palestine and Syria, being promoted Captain in 1916 and Major in 1918, commanding no 11 and no 13 Mountain Batteries, no 181st Heavy Battery, and the 95th Heavy brigade. After the war he commanded the Argyll battery (TA) from 1924 to 1929. He married Catherine Johnston, of Maxwell Park, Glasgow, in 1922.
Lake Falconer Senior died at Ardblair, Oban, Argyllshire in February 1922; Lake Junior died at sea in February 1940 while on his way to Barra to inspect a lifeboat station.
