Basic Biographical Details Name: | George McCulloch Brand | Designation: | | Born: | 18 January 1863 | Died: | 28 January 1954 | Bio Notes: | George McCulloch Brand was born at 44 Shamrock Street, Glasgow on 18 January 1863, the son of William Brand, carver and gilder (and later art critic) and his wife Agnes McCulloch. His professional training is not yet known but in the 1891 census he was described as a measurer, while his experiments with ferro-concrete suggest that he may have had some engineering experience.
Late in 1891 or early in 1892 he formed a partnership with Samuel Beglan (or Beglain) Lithgow, the practice being styled Brand & Lithgow with an office at 131 West Regent Street. This partnership was dissolved in or about 1915, probably because of lack of business or separate wartime commitments.
Brand thereafter practised on his own, but scaled down his practice to his home address at 10 Highburgh Terrace in 1933-34. He married twice, first to Margaret Brown Steven at Partick in 1904 and seemingly to Mary Ann Clough Edington at Hillhead in 1918. He died in Govan of arterio sclerosis on 28 January 1954, his usual address then being 20 Woodside Place. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 17, Montague Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | 1891 * | | | | 131, West Regent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1894 | 1920 | | | 65, Bank Street, Hillhead, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | 1896 | 1900 | | | 76, Montgomerie Street, Kelvinside, Gasgow, Scotland | Private | 1904 | 1905 | | | 74, Bath Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1924 | 1925 | | | 65, West Regent Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1929 | 1930 | | | 10, Highburgh Terrace, Glasgow, Scotland | Private/business | c. 1933 | c. 1940 | | | 20, Woodside Place, Glasgow, Scotland | Private | 1954 * | | |
