Basic Site Details Name: | St Ann's Terrace, North Bridge | City or county: | Edinburgh | Country: | Scotland | Parish: | | Status: | | Grid ref: | | Notes: | The project ran into difficulties because the Dean of Guild objected to Crichton's detailing, height and width of windows etc. Because of the slope of the ground, a whole series of lower floors had to be inserted under each lot before tenements on top could be habitable. Also, the position next to North Bridge prevented all light on the eastern side. Because of the difficult site , builders were slow to come forward and the project was therefore a financial disaster.
The builder John Thin, who took the deepest and most southerly lot, came out of this badly and the case was brought to the Court of Session by the investors. The outcome is unclear but in the end the terrace was built.
