Basic Site Details Name: | New Alhambra Theatre | City or county: | Glasgow | Country: | Scotland | Parish: | | Status: | Unexecuted | Grid ref: | | Notes: | This was the site of James Salmon's proposed Lantern Theatre for the Scottish Repertory Company Ltd, 1918.
New Alhambra Theatre (site became Wateroo Street Bus Station in 1927) To be built by a new company headed by Sir Alfred Butt as a sister theatre to the existing Alhambra Theatre. The site was bought by Butt to stop competitors Scottish Repertory Co Ltd from buying it as the site for the theatre proposed for them by James Salmon, whose drawing of the proposed Lantern Theatre was earlier described as for Pitt Street/Bothwell Street. The “New Alhambra Theatre” proposed name had been chosen when Butt made his announcement, but never released to the public. The outline plans were prepared by Sir John Burnet, who also prepared comparative costings and revenue capacities of Glasgow and London theatres. (Plans most likely lost to posterity when the Burnett office papers were not withdrawn out of a 1939-45 storage facility- DMW. )In place of a second theatre the existing Alhambra was extended westwards along Waterloo Street in 1927/28.
