Notes: Built to defend the city and harbour of Aberdeen against the perceived threat posed by Napoleon III of France, Torry Point Battery replaced a number of older defence structures in the area. In 1858 agreement had been reached to build coastal batteries on Torry Point and tenders for the construction of the Battery were sought in January 1860. Completed in March 1861, it wasinitially manned by a unit of the newly formed 1st Aberdeenshire Royal Garrison Artillery (Volunteers). The battery was armed with nine heavy guns (six 68-pounders and three 10-inch shell guns) but in September 1861 two 200-pound Armstrong guns- the heaviest of the day - were added. In 1895 the battery was partially dismantled. The battery was reconstructed in 1904-1906 when CP mark II mountings were installed for two new 6-inch mark VII guns at a cost of £5640. The battery was permanently occupied during both world wars, and retained its guns throughout the interwar period.
