| Royal Naval Base | £13m. Construction started December 1963 and due to complete in 1968. The base will house 160 officers and 1,300 ratings on 125 acre site sloping towards Gareloch. Up to 1,700 men worked towards construction; majority of structures constructed in concrete including: jetty for berthing submarines, a scheme to supply water from Loch Sloy, mess, recreation building, five 4-storey sleeping blocks for ratings, dining, refreshment and recreation facilities, shopping arcade, administration building, naval store, victualling store, and wardroom block [Building, 26 April 1968]. |
