Mr Forsyth writes:
'Referring to the name Smithycroft I can assure that it is all one word. It may have been in the past before a housing scheme was added that there was a blacksmith with a croft there and when the authorities decided on a name for a road nearby they decided on Smithycroft. That is my romantic version of events!

The design came about as a result of my Degree Thesis at the Art school which was entitled ‘Post War School Building in Scotland’ and I had just joined the Corporation of Glasgow which had a large school building programme after the war at a time when money was tight and I sought to reduce the circulation to a minimum, thereby saving money but I was also interested in trying this unique shape and it worked out very well. So much so that the school was opened by the then Secretary of State William Ross.'
