'This house is built at Aboyne on the estate of the Marquis of Huntly and stands overlooking the suspension bridge leading to the Elan Lana Road(sic). The site is beautifully situated and commands a view over the River Dee and the surrounding hills for many miles. The house is built of Cambus o’ May granite with slated roof and has a verandah and balcony facing the river, sheltered from the north and east. The house has been built by Mr Alexander McKay, contractor, Aberdeen from the designs of Mr James M Price (sic), architect, Aberdeen.' [Building News 27 December 1901, 1870]
N.B. The contractor was Alexander McKay. He may also have been the client but this is being checked.
The bridge mentioned above may be the bridge at Waterside (see separate entry for this):
This bridge was built for the Marquis of Huntly below Waterside, 2 miles upstream from Aboyne on the Aberdeenshire Dee (Map Ref NO 495981). Built in 1871 it is an early bridge, of 300 feet span, with a unique arrangement of two pairs of main cables between two sets of tension boxes. These may be seen at the top and half way up the pylons. The span was ambitious for the year and the longest by far using the Harper’s Patent Cable tensioners. It is not known how long it lasted. | Building Type ClassificationThe building is classified under the following categories: | | Classification | Original classification? | Notes | | House | | |
