Notes: £5000 bequeathed by Miss Meffan in 1879 for building Institute. The winning design by Tait Conner & Mitchell was going to be too expensive so in order to save £400, the design was re-submitted stripped of its ornament and cost £2300.

William Nairne Tait is credited with this building in 'Builder' obituary but this is wrong.
