Bio Notes: John Robb was born in March 1783 in Elie, Fife the son of Hugh Robb, a sailor, and Janet Carstairs dtr of James Carstairs.
On 21 May 1810, in Edinburgh, John married Janet Aitken, daughter of Alexander Aitken. They had at least two daughters. In October 1832 his wife Janet died at the family home at 40 Claremont Street. In the early 1820s Robb was responsible for the construction of much of the south side of Cumberland Street and lived in one of the houses (No.33) here from 1825 moving later to (East) Claremont Street and then back to Cumberland Street.
In 1837 he built and attempted to sell four dwelling houses in Claremont Street, which were still for sale in 1841, and this may be linked to his sequestration later that same year. By the end of this decade the family had moved to 22 Barony Street.

In 1857 he pleaded guilty to understating the rates of twenty-four of his tenants and was fined.
