Basic Biographical Details Name: | David Haig Robb | Designation: | | Born: | 1875 | Died: | 1946 | Bio Notes: | David was born in Alloa on 22nd February 1875 the son of Andrew Robb and Mary Swanson. His elder brothers John, Andrew and James all became road surveyors. By the age of 16 he had become a drafter’s apprentice, later moving to Edinburgh. In the 1901 census he is recorded as a Road Surveyor’s Assistant living in Caledonian Place, Dalry. At this time he worked for the Midlothian County Council under his elder brother John, the County Surveyor. In March 1904 he was appointed Road Surveyor for the lower district (Machars) of Wigtownshire. At the age of 30 he married the 32 year old Mary James at the house of his brother Andrew in Edinburgh on 4th August 1905. In 1913 he attended the 3rd International Road Congress in London. In November 1923 he became a member of the Institute of Municipal Engineers, and the following year gave his profession as Surveyor, Roads & Bridges, Machars District. He occupied this post until retiring, when he continued as a Consultant Road Surveyor until his death on 20th September 1946, at South Cliff, Portpatrick.
