Bio Notes: James Ramsay was a Scottish architect and landscape designer who was based in Edinburgh. John Claudius Loudon states in ‘Encyclopaedia of Gardening’ (1828) that he trained as a mason and was employed as such by Robert Robinson. However he showed an appreciation of landscape and afterwards became a well-respected landscape gardener. Loudon continues ‘He gave both ground-plans and drawings in perspective, both of the buildings and scenery. Leith Head, a small place near Edinburgh, is entirely his creation. His style was that of Brown…’. As well as his work as a landscape gardener at Cally House, Gosford and elsewhere he was responsible for a number of buildings and street layouts.

Ramsay died on 22 May 1820.
