Bio Notes: It is unclear as yet when Dugal Campbell was born. His career as a military engineer began in 1734 when he became a Sub-Engineer in the Civil Branch of the Ordnance establishment in the Tower of London. He was promoted to the rank of Engineer Extraordinary in 1744.

Campbell participated in the campaign against the Jacobites in 1745-46 (he may have been the Captain Dugal Campbell who drew a plan for the position of the canons at Culloden) and served in Flanders in 1746-47. Having been promoted in 1757 to Major, with the appointment of Chief Engineer in North America, he was in Louisbourg in Nova Scotia that year. He died in October 1757 while on his way between Halifax and New York.

Campbell’s sister Janet was married to Leonard Smelt who was also a military engineer who was well-known in social circles.
