Adam Anderson was born about 1780. He was a man of many parts. He was rector of Perth Academy from 1809 to 1837. In the latter year he became Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of St Andrews. While at Perth he was involved with a number of schemes for municipal improvement including the provision of a good water supply. He acted as engineer for the water system 1830-1832 and designed the waterworks building in Perth, now the Fergusson Gallery.
Anderson was found dead in his bed on 11 December 1846.
