Bio Notes: John Ralston was born in 1878 in Dumbarton, the son of John Ralston, cabinetmaker and his wife Robina. He studied at the Royal Technical College in Glasgow and was articled to J M Crawford in Dumbarton. In 1901 he was still living with his parents and siblings in Dumbarton. He emigrated to South Africa, sailing from Liverpool on the 'Persic' on 15 January 1903. He disembarked in Cape Town and started work there, moving to Pretoria and Johannesburg within a few years. He worked for a period in the office of Baker Masey & Sloper. He commenced independent practice in 1906 after winning various competitions. After about 1911 he seems to have been based in Johannesburg. Little is known of his career between about 1911 and 1925. About 1917-18 he entered two competitions with J C Cook as Cook & Ralston and later worked in association with P R Cooke.

Ralston died in 1955.
