Basic Biographical Details Name: | Archibald F Brown | Designation: | | Born: | 8 November 1933 | Died: | 24 September 2016 | Bio Notes: | Archibald F Brown was born in Wishaw on 8 November 1933 but his family moved to Lanark when he was seven years old. After leaving school, he was articled to a local architect while at the same time taking the part-time course in architecture in Glasgow. In 1955, together with some fellow students he moved up to Edinburgh to the College of Art to take advantage of the exempt status the School had to the RIBA intermediate (Part Three ) which Glasgow did not then enjoy.
However he was unable to complete his studies and gain qualification, and he joined the practice of Donald Whitehorn which was based in Rutland Square. By 1960 he was living in Deanbank House, Deanbank Terrace, Edinburgh. That same year he moved to the practice of Fairbrother Hall and Hedges (later Bamber and Hall).
In the mid-1960s he moved again to a post in the practice of J & F Johnston in Leith. In 1970 he took a post with Covell Mathews where he came under pressure to complete the rest of his course towards full qualification and registration. He was elected ARIBA in 1977. In 1979 he joined Henry Wylie & Partners. However he decided after a short time to set up business on his own account and by 1981 practised as A F Brown from his home in Corstorphine, Edinburgh. He was still practising at the same address in 1994. He was elected a Fellow of the RIAS which gave him great pleasure.
In his early eighties he was diagnosed with a heart condition and underwent surgery at the Brompton Hospital in London. He returned to his practice which has been managed in his absence by friends. He retired to Kirkcaldy in about 2000.
Brown died on 24 September 2016 in Kirkcaldy. He is survived by his wife Eileen, his son and daughter and grandchildren.
