Basic Biographical Details

Name: William ('Bill') Hepburn
Designation:
Born: 9 June 1936
Died: 28 October 2010
Bio Notes: William Hepburn, generally known as Bill, was born on 9 June 1936 in Edinburgh. His national service was spent as a radar operator in the RAF at Catterick. He married young and had two children before commencing part-time study at Edinburgh College of Art, concurrently holding a full-time job.

He briefly worked on new housing for Glenrothes before leaving Scotland for good. In England, he first found employment in Newton Aycliffe, near Durham, and then moved to Crawley in Sussex. There, he worked for the Borough Council for the rest of his career.

Hepburn had a warm personality and a contagious sense of humour. Persuasive in debate, as a young man he managed to convince the RIBA examiners that his project did in fact conform to their requirements, after they had initially claimed it did not. He was an active sportsman and adventurer, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, jumping out of a helicopter and travelling in the Yemen, Jeddah and Africa, where he narrowly avoided attack by a crocodile. With his wife Maureen and children Anne, Alan and Scott, he frequently holidayed in St Andrews, where he enjoyed playing golf, and at St Helier on Jersey.

He was diagnosed with cancer in early 2010 and, radiotherapy having proved ineffective, died on 28 October that year.
