Bio Notes: John James Springford (known as James) was born in Ealing, London in June 1940 and was evacuated with his mother and brother to Dundee. He attended Clepington Primary School and Stobswell Secondary School where he was Technical Dux. He was apprenticed to W M Wilson in June 1955, and gained a qualification in Building at Dundee Technical College in 1958. He also studied at the College of Preceptors in Edinburgh to equip himself with the necessary qualifications for entering Dundee College of Art in 1959. He studied architecture there from that year until 1964 during which period he worked in the practice of RMJM. He was elected ARIBA in 1966.

His first job was with the practice Reiach & Hall but he left to study for a degree in town planning at Heriot Watt College (now University). He worked in the office of Leslie Norton in 1966, but in 1968 he moved to South Africa where he was employed by Professor Ivan Schlapobersky who was head of Planning and Urban Design at Witwatersland University in Johannesburg. In 1969 he worked as a planner for Holford Associates but returned to South Africa to work in the practice Withers & Gerke in 1970. He became a member of the Institute of Town Planning and Urban Design in South Africa in 1971.

He returned to Great Britain in 1974 and worked in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, spending the remaining 27 years of his career with Ian Burke Associates, ultimately as owner and manager of the practice. He retired in 2000.

Springford married Jean Ann Tod in 1965 and they have two sons, Jamie, born 1966 and Hugh, born 1967.
