He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art and was elected ARIBA in 1963. By 1975 he had formed a partnership with George Kenneth Oliver. The practice was based in Dunfermline. The name had changed to Torrance Oliver by 1980.
He died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on 16 December 1991.
