Bio Notes: David Norman Torrance was born on 22 August 1937, the son of James Torrance, grain merchant, and his wife Anne Malcolm Balmain. He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art and was elected ARIBA in 1963. By 1975 he had formed a partnership with George Kenneth Oliver. The practice was based in Dunfermline. The name had changed to Torrance Oliver by 1980.

He died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on 16 December 1991. He was survived by his wife Olive Rankin Torrie.
