He was the grandson of James Gray Aitchison, architect who had set up practice in Glasgow which had been run by Robert Aitchison as James G Aitchison & Son after his father's death. James Gray Aitchison junior studied at the University of Strathclyde graduating BArch. He was elected ARIBA in 1974. The family practice was revived in the late 1970s or 1980s.
