Bio Notes: Derek Mickel was born on 12 April 1935 into the family which ran the building form Mactaggart & Mickel. He was educated at Belmont House School and Dollar Academy. He gradtuated in architecture and town planning from the University of Strathclyde but also enjoyed a spell at the School of Art in Glasgow.

While he was a student he worked in the office of Frank Burnet Bell & Partners but after graduation joined the firm of Jack Coia and worked on several Glasgow churches. Derek Mickel's father died not long after he graduated and he moved to work in the family firm.

He was involved in the Homes for the Future project at Glasgow Green and played a role in developing new forms of construction which had to comply with increasingly stringent building regulations. He helped to form the way in which the family firm developed. He was presented in 2013 with a lifetime achievement award by 'Homes for Scotland' for his contribution to housebuilding.

As a person he was calm and friendly and knew the names of every employee in the firm where he was known as 'Mr Derek'.

He died on holiday in Fuertaventura on 15 November 2015 as the result of a swimming accident. He is survived by his wife Ann, his son and two grandsons.
