Basic Biographical Details Name: | Robert ('Bob') John Duguid | Designation: | | Born: | 30 December 1941 | Died: | 11 May 2001 | Bio Notes: | Robert ('Bob') John Duguid was born on 30 December 1941, the son of George Duguid, farm labourer, and his wife Jessie Helen Connon. He studied at Robert Gordon's School of Architecture in Aberdeen from 1961-65 obtaining his diploma in architecture. He worked as an assistant in several different private practices from 1965-69, the last two years spent as group leader mainly working on industrial projects. He spent 1969-71 with a builder/developer's company where he was head of research and development. He was elected ARIBA in 1969.
In 1971 he joined the practice of D L Brice and in 1973 he became a partner. He was involved in local authority housing in Hamilton and Rutherglen and ran a programme of housing renovation in the latter place. Following on from this the practice was appointed by Glasgow Corporation to draw up a 'Condition and Potential' survey of tenements in Elderpark. This was one step toward the creation of community based Housing Associations with the advent of Housing Action Areas and the control by local people of the redevelopment of their own environment. The initial work by the practice was on a small scale with three rehabilitated closes in Crossloan Road in 1975. However this soon grew in size to redevelopment on a large scale and Duguid became an expert in the renovation work and handling contracts for many Associations. Duguid had an easy manner and wry sense of humour which he put to good effect in negotiating between residents, officials and contractors. The practice drew up feasibility studies on the following areas: Dumbarton Road, Partick; Houshillwood, Pollock; Pollokshaws Road, Govanhill; Gorbals Street, Glasgow.
While Duguid was involved with renovation work, Douglas Brice was responsible for the new build but in the design and construction of Whiteinch Homes they worked in tandem. This quality of this development was recognised by a Regeneration of Scotland award.
From 1991 Duguid was sole partner and the practice title changed to Duguid Design.
In his spare time he was very active, enjoying sailing, sail-boarding, squash and hill-walking. Duguid died suddenly when hillwalking on Ben Wyvis on 11 May 2001, survived by his wife Wendy MacKenzie, a PE teacher, and their son, Ross, also an architect and daughter, Jill, an engineer. | Private and Business AddressesThe following private or business addresses are associated with this : | | Address | Type | Date from | Date to | Notes | | 53, Thistle Street, Aberdeen, Scotland | Private | 1965 | | | | 30, St Anne's Drive, Giffnock, Renfrewshiere, Scotland | Private | 1970 | 1988 | | | 31A, Dalmarnock Road, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Business | 1971 | 1974 | | | 90, Main Street, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland | Business | 1974 | 1993 | | | Eglinton Drive, Giffnock, Renfrewshire, Scotland | Private | 1988 | 2001 | | | Park Lane House/47, Broad Street, Glasgow, Scotland | Business | 1993 | 2001 | |
