Basic Biographical Details Name: | Andrew George Murray Flaws | Designation: | | Born: | 31 March 1953 | Died: | 25 November 2005 | Bio Notes: | Andrew George Murray Flaws (known as Murray) was born in Stirling on 31 March 1953. His family moved when he was young to Dumfries. He was educated at Wallacehall Academy where he distinguished himself being both Head Boy and Dux of the School.
As a youth, also Murray excelled as an oarsman at rowing and notably at 17 won the Scottish Schoolboy Championship in sculling in 1970. Thereafter, he was only narrowly beaten in the National Schoolboy Championships at Pangbourne Regatta, taking an 'early bath' when (arguably) the wake of a passing press boat caused him to capsize his fine scull mid-race.
He studied architecture at Heriot Watt University and spent his 'year out' with Sutherland Dickie & Copland in Dumfries. He returned to the practice after graduation before moving to Robert Potter & Sons. In 1969 he joined Aitken & Turnbull and was the first full time member of staff of the branch of that firm in Dumfries. He became a partner in October 1993.
He was responsible for the design of much private and public sector housing; health & care sector premises; schools; offices and public utility buildings of various types throughout Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders. Two of his notable latter projects were Dumfries Infirmary Reception & Offices Suite and Dumfries Cairndale Hotel Function Suite.
He died in a car accident on the A75 outside Dumfries on 25 November 2005. His obituarist notes that he 'never saw him angry, depressed or defeated. He was conscientious, inquisitive, funny, hard-working, gregarious, hospitable, talented, loyal, generous, respected and admired'. That he was held in high esteem is evidenced by the fact that his funeral service at Crichton Church, Dumfries brought traffic in the town to a standstill. Murray was a lifelong member, supporter and for many years an active veteran participant in Dumfries Rowing Club and since his death has had a new boat named 'Murzo' in his memory. He is also remembered for his tireless contributions to his local village community life in Dalton, Dumfriesshire.
He was survived by his wife Karen and his daughter Ellen.
