Basic Biographical Details Name: | Robert White | Designation: | | Born: | 29 April 1929 | Died: | 25 December 2000 | Bio Notes: | Robert White was born on 29 April 1929 in Galston, Ayrshire, the son of Robert White, coal miner, and his wife Janet McCall Stewart. He was articled to Stevenson & Ferguson in 1946 and attended Glasgow School of Art as a part-time student. He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1953 and in that year he became an assistant with Alex Dunlop in Kilmarnock and remained with the practice until he married in 1955. He moved to Dundee to a post with the City and completed his architectural studies at Dundee College of Art. In 1959 he joined the staff of Cumbernauld Development Corporation and moved to join Ravenscraig Steel Corporation Architect's Department two years later. He joined Walter Underwood & Partners in Glasgow in 1961, moving again to Hamilton Burgh Council in 1964. He was elected ARIBA in 1964. In 1968 he started business on his own account, as Robert White Associates, first practising in Falkirk and then in Cumbernauld. He retired in 1992.
Outwith his profession he was a keen Rotarian and served twice as president of the Cumbernauld Club. He was a keen fisherman and a keen bowler, both indoors and outdoors. He was also interested in literature and music, especially jazz. He was a retired FRIAS when he died at Strathcarron Hospice on Christmas Day 2000. He was survived by his wife Isobel Thomson King Melville and three daughters.
