Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Keith Ingham | Designation: | | Born: | 9 July 1932 | Died: | 23 April 1995 | Bio Notes: | John Keith Ingham (generally known as Keith Ingham) was born on 9 July 1932, into a family of builders in Lytham St Anne's and retained a strong loyalty to Lancashire. He was educated at the Leys School, Cambridge, and studied architecture at University College London, under Professor Hector Corfiato, against whose traditional regime he rebelled. He spent the year 1954 working in Lytham for Tom Mellor. In 1956 he joined the Preston office of Grenfell Baines and Hargreaves which became Building Design Partnership in 1959. At BDP, Ingham rose rapidly to associateship. Within this multi-disciplinary group, based in the parent office in Preston, Ingham was distinguished by his commitment to the supremacy of design and visual considerations.
Ingham was responsible for various notable buildings including Preston Bus Station, Methodist Church, Poulton-le-Fylde and a large number of private houses. He enhanced the firm's prestige with design awards, such as the RIBA Ideal Home House competition in 1962 and his work received ten Civic Trust Awards or Commendations for his work as well as a DOE Housing Medal.
Ingham was elected FRIBA on 2 April 1969, proposed by George Grenfell Baines, Tom Mellor and David Rock(?)
Ingham was involved in a large number of national and local bodies concerned with art and the environment. In 1975 he served as chairman of RIBA North West Region and in 1976 Vice President RIBA for Membership and Public Affairs. He was a founder member and first secretary of Urban Design Group and in 1980 he set up Woodscape, a company marketing timber street furniture to his designs when he found none existing to his liking.
In 1978 Ingham left BDP having not yet achieved partnership and set up his own practice.
Ingham died in Manchester on 23 April 1995. His marriage to Margaret Dearden in 1956 and by whom he had three children was dissolved in 1979.
