Basic Biographical Details Name: | Robert Stewart Smith | Designation: | | Born: | 18 August 1933 | Died: | 2005 | Bio Notes: | Robert Stewart Smith was born at Fort House Nursing Home, Perth Road, Dundee on 18 August 1933, the son of Robert Smith, coal traveller, and his wife Helen Stewart Robb. He began the 6-year part-time course at Dundee School of Architecture while simultaneously serving his articles with Gauldie Hardie Wright & Needham. He was elected ARIBA in 1958, his proposers being John Needham, William Sinclair Gauldie and Arthur Francis Stevenson Wright. At the time of his election he was working in the Architect’s Department of Perth & Kinross Joint County Council.
Later in 1958 he emigrated to Ontario, Canada where he was a partner with Howard O’Gorman in Timmins. In March 1963 he left to set up practice on his own account. His practice was responsible for a wide variety of buildings, including schools, housing and churches. He was elected FRIBA in 1966, his proposers being William Sinclair Gauldie, Arthur Francis Stevenson Wright and William Allan Cairns. He died in Canada in the summer of 2005.
