Bio Notes: Francis Whitehurst Kitchin obtained his architectural education by taking evening classes at Liverpool City Technical School from 1929 to 1933, while working in the architectural department of furniture manufacturer Waring & Gillow from 1929 to 1930 and for Felix Holt from 1930 to 1933. In 1933 he went to Brighton to work for William Tomkinson & Sons, and the following year he moved to the office of Richard Owens & Sons. He joined the architect's department of Woolworth & Co in 1936, and worked on their Glasgow store. Whilst there, during holidays, he made architectural tours of buildings in France and Belgium.

During the Second World War he served in the Admiralty, in Fife in 1941-2 and in Leeds in 1942-4. He was elected LRIBA in 1945; his nomination papers do not show any proposers.

Kitchin died in December 1999.
