Basic Biographical Details Name: | Gerald Rainey McSheffrey | Designation: | | Born: | 13 August 1931 | Died: | | Bio Notes: | Gerald Rainey McSheffrey was born on 13 August 1931. He studied iniitially at Belfast College of Technology from 1956 and for the diploma in architecture at University College London which was awarded in 1959. He was elected ARIBA in 1960. From 1960-62 he worked in the office of Munce & Kennedy in Belfast. In the latter year he moved study for the diploma in civic design at the University of Edinburgh.
In 1963 McSheffrey took as post as chief assistant planning officer in the City Planning Department in Liverpool. The following year he moved again, this time to Livingston New Town as assistant architect. He remained for a year in Livingston but returned to Belfast to re-join the James Munce Partnership as associate. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and from 1965-66 he had leave of absence from his post during which time he was assistant professor at the University of Kansas.
From 1968 to 1971 he was Principal Planning Officer (Design) in the Belfast City Planning Department. He managed a staff of fourteen. His work involved drawing up district plans and action plan areas for central area and housing redevelopment areas. He wrote planning briefs for statutory housing authorities and private developers. His work also involved liaison with the Principal Planning Office (Developemtn Control). He was also responsible for collating material for public exhibitions and public participation in planning initiatives. He was elected FRIBA in 1971 proposed by James F Munce, Robert McKinstry and Ian Campbell. He left Belfast in 1971 to become Professor in Urban Design in Kansas. This post lasted until 1973 when he returned to Belfast to take up the post of Belfast Regional Architect, and director of development in the Norther Ireland Housing Executive. The period 1976-79 was spent at Kansas as director of architectural studies.
In 1979 he was appointed Professor of Architecture and Dean of the College of Architecture Planning and Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1982 he moved to a post as Dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Arizona State University where he continued until 1986. He was vice president at Arizona State University, West Campus, Phoenix, 1985-1988. From 1988-1998 he had the post of Professor of Architecture at Arizona and since 1998 professor and dean emeritus. In 1989 he was visiting fellow at Princeton University .
