In September 1933 he started attending day classes for the diploma course at Glasgow School of Art while at the same time working for George Arthur & Son in Airdrie. In 1939 he was promoted to chief assistant in the same practice. He sat the fianl exam in June 1939 and was awarded the Bourdon Travelling Scholarship but the war intervened and he was unable to take advantage of the award.
He was elected ARIBA on 12 December 1939, poposed by Thomas Harold Hughes, John Maurice Arthur and Professor William James Smith.
