Bio Notes: Alan S Train was born on 25 June 1958. He initially studied at the Architectural Association in London. He then moved to Glasgow and enrolled full-time at the Mackintosh School of Architecture from October 1976, completing Part I in June 1980, graduating BArch in June 1980. He returned to study part-time for his diploma and Part III DipArch in June 1989. He commenced work with Strathclyde Regional Council DARS Central Design in November 1999.

His first project for the Region was Lorne Street Community Education Centre and he subsequently designed a range of other educational buildings most notably the conversion of Tradeston School, which won an award and the redevelopment of Lorne Street Nursery. In all his team produced a series of twenty-one schools of varying scale. He was responsible for setting up the DLO standard schools footprint which strived to achieve the maximum benefit for all the users of these facilities.

Alan was acknowledged as having strong socialist principles. He was widely admired by his colleagues for his humour and dedication. Shortly after he died in August 2008, it was announced that his team had won one of the 2008 City of Glasgow Flourish Awards. His obituarist concludes thus: ' Like so many of those who work within the public sector, Alan achievements were immense - with very little public recognition, which suited this self-effacing, driven, passionate socialist architect'. He is survived by his wife, Yamina, and his son Sean.
