Basic Biographical Details Name: | Arthur John Elborn | Designation: | | Born: | 17 April 1918 | Died: | 4 March 1997 | Bio Notes: | Arthur John Elborn was born on 17 April 1918 in Glasgow, the son of John Cedley Caulfield Elborn, lawyer, and his wife Jane Sheridan. He was educated at Hutchison's Grammar School. He commenced studying architecture at Glasgow School of Art but this was interrupted by the Second World War when he served with the RAF. On demobilisation he returned to his studies, taking the full-time course. He was elected ARIBA in 1948.
After qualifying he took a temporary job in Doncaster. He intended to go to work in Singapore but his plans fell through and he went to work for Carlisle City Council and remained there for three years. He then had a series of short contracts at Enniskillen, Glasgow and Lanark. In September 1957, Arthur secured a senior post with Stirling County Council where, apart from a short spell in Edinburgh in connection with the Commonwealth Games, he spent the remainder of his career. He mainly worked on school projects and perhaps his major work was the new Stirling High School.
He was admitted ARIAS in 1964.
Elborn was a committed Christian and was involved with Airth Parish Church where he served as Elder and Session Clerk. He professional skill and time were given to the major restoration programme undertaken by the church and to the ongoing maintainence of the building. He also assisted the Leader of the local Scout Group and became Leader himself in due course. He designed and perhaps funded a new scout hut.
Arthur Elborn had a ready wit and sense of humour and was described by one of his former colleagues as 'a true gentleman, consistently courteous and friendly, relating well to colleagues and associates. Arthur was popular with all, particularly those who were fortunate enough to be part of his team.'
