He was educated at Glasgow Academy. He studied for the degrees of BSc and BArch at Strathclyde University and was elected ARIBA in 1985 and ARIAS about the same time. He formed a partnership in the mid-1980s with William Morris Condie as Condie Plummer Architects, the practice being based at Brousterland in East Kilbride.
Outwith his work he was a committed and hard-working member of his church, St Mary's Episcopal Church in Hamilton where he was involved with the Sunday School, the youth group and Tollcross YMCA. He was also interested in amateur dramatics - as performer, stagehand and president of Hamilton Operatic. He was also an ambassador for the Girl Guides and not long before his death was appointed chairman of The Hamilton Churches Youth Group.
