He was a student member of the RIBA from 1948. He studied at the School of Art, Glasgow and was elected ARIBA in 1950. He had joined the practice of William Baillie & Son by 1970. He was still working with the practice in 1987.
Shaw died on 16 July 1992 at his home in Newton Mearns.
