Basic Biographical Details Name: | Harvey Johnston | Designation: | | Born: | 15 October 1911 | Died: | 10 April 1995 | Bio Notes: | Harvey Johnston was born on 15 October 1911, the son of William Redpath Johnston, textile designer, and his wife Jeannie Young. He started his architectural career in Haddington and moved to Gillespie & Scott in 1935. In 1939 he enlisted and served with the Royal Engineers reaching the rank of 2nd Lieutenant by the cease of hostilities. After the war he joined the practice of L A Rolland in Leven. In 1954 he was elected ARIAS. The following year, 1955, he left to set up practice with Robert H Seath, a colleague from Rolland's office as Johnston & Seath.
They were joined by David Martin in 1960, and after Bob Seath's death in 1962, by Robert Nairn. Johnston himself retired in 1979 and R W Kidd joined under a new name, Johnston Seath & Partners. The practice amalgamated in 1992 with Alistair M Smith Architects, Edinburgh under the title of the Johnston Smith Partnership. A M Brough joined the practice at this time.
During Johnston's varied architectural career he diversified into property valuations, land surveying and agricultural drainage as well as architectural design. His work includes conservation work on historic buildings in Cupar as well as new shops, offices, garages housing and factories throughout Fife.
Even after retirement Johnston kept up his interest in the progress of the practice. He died at Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy aged 83 on 10 April 1995.
