Basic Biographical Details Name: | George Gilford | Designation: | | Born: | 22 July 1905 | Died: | 1975 | Bio Notes: | George Gilford was born on 22 July 1905. From 1920-22 he took evening classes in perspective, ornament and still life at Liverpool City School of Art. In the latter year he began his articles with W T Clarke in Liverpool while at the same time taking evening classes in building construction at Liverpool Technical Institute.
He joined the construction department of F W Woolworth as a junior in 1926, in due course becoming a senior architectural assistant. From 1940 he served with HM Forces as military foreman of works and later clerk of works, reaching the rank of Warrant Officer Class II. After demobilisation in 1945 he returned to his previous post as senior architectural assistant. He was elected LRIBA in 1947, proposed by H Winbourne, B Palmer Page and T C Page. In his Nomination Paper, Winbourne states that Gilford had been responsible for the design and erection of new and alterations to existing shop premises at Arbroath, Galashiels, Lancaster, Birkenhead, Douglas, Isle of Man and Sheffield.
He may have been in charge of the Liverpool office from the early 1960s until 1968. He retired in 1970 and died in 1975.
