He studied for the diploma in architecture at Liverpool, spending six months in an office in New York in 1947 and graduating the following year. He was admitted ARIBA in 1949; and was elected FRIBA on 26 June 1963, proposed by Robert Robertson Reid Young, George Arthur Hall and another (seemingly H Hugh Wright). At that time he was a partner in the practice of Stephen Young & Partners in Liverpool. His nomination papers state that he had made research visits to Germany, Denmark and Holland in 1960 and to Sweden and Denmark in 1962. All the work listed in the papers is English - in Wrexham, Stourport, Widnes, Manchester and elsewhere.
By 1964 he had set up his own practice in that city as Kingham Knight Associates.
