Bio Notes: Bernard Laurie Matthew was born on 7 August 1925, the son of Thomas Matthew, coal merchant and his wife ___Ebbs. He studied at the School of Architecture, Edinburgh College of Art and graduated in 1951. He was admitted ARIBA in 1952 and FRIAS in 1964. H H Haswell Smith joined him in partnership some time before 1965. This was dissolved in the early 1970s. By 1970 he was practising as Matthew Smith & Partners from the Queen Street address. By 1987 the practice name was Matthew Hamilton & McLean Architects in partnership with William Clive Braid Hamilton and Alexander Hall Maclean.

Matthew died at his home in Edinburgh on 4 November 2004. His wife, Beatrice Mary Beveridge, had predeceased him but he was survived by a son who lived in Kingston-upon-Thames.
