In 1943 he was conscripted He studied architecture at the University of Glasgow from 1941-43 where he served in the University Senior Training Corps. He was conscripted in 1943 and posted to Royal Engineers Training. he was commissioned in June 1944. He first saw active service with the 3rd British Infantry Division in Belgium and in the Netherlands, repairing roads and bridges and clearing mine fields. He took part in the fierce battles of Operation 'Aintree' during which the Allies suffered heavy losses but captured the strategic region. In 1945 he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. After the war in Europe, Fotheringham was posted to Palestine with the 'Empire Mobile Reserve' where he ended his army career in June 1947 and was demobbed in 1948.
He returned to his studies and DA graduated DA (later converting this to BArch, Strathclyde University or Glasgow University) and also obtained a diploma in town planning at Glasgow. He was elected a student member of the RIBA in 1949 and ARIBA in 1951 (and ARIAS in 1963).
He moved to Harlow New Town for a brief period in the 1950s and then to Glenrothes from about 1956-1960 before he joined the practice of T I Morton & Son in Dumfries prior in 1960. He would appear to have been a partner by about 1970. The name of the practice changed to Morton Architects before 1980.
His final move was to Glasgow University in 1979 where he was Assistant Director of Estates until 1996.
