Basic Biographical Details Name: | Frank H Clark | Designation: | | Born: | 1902 | Died: | 1971 | Bio Notes: | Frank H Clark, a landscape architect, came from an expatriate background. By the end of 1945 he was a teacher and authority on the 18th century English landscape garden, publishing his influential book, 'The English Landscape Garden', in 1948, and by the late 1950s he was one of the most distinguished Modernist landscapists active in Britain, and President of the Institute of Landscape Architects.
Clark worked as chief landscape consultant to London County Council’s Festival of Britain team from 1949-50 and was a lecturer at Reading University until 1959. In July 1959 he was appointed senior lecturer for landscape architecture at the new architecture department at the University of Edinburgh by Robert Matthew, whom he had first met while working with the Festival of Britain team. He subsequently directed the new landscape architecture postgraduate diploma course which was set up in 1962. He was an experienced teacher and built up a small group of dedicated students at Edinburgh, including John Byrom.
Following his move to Edinburgh, Clark also carried out a series of landscape commissions with Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall & Partners, such as the new universities at York and Stirling.
