Basic Biographical Details Name: | MacTaggart and Mickel Ltd | Designation: | | Born: | | Died: | | Bio Notes: | After the First World War Andrew Mickel joined forces with the house-building firm of John Auld Mactaggart and together they founded the house-building firm of Mactaggart & Mickel on 1 March 1925.
Andrew Mickel was born in 1877, the eldest son of Andrew Mickel, draper and his wife Helen Weir. He was articled as a joiner to his uncle Robert Mickel, builder and became architect as well as builder, studying at Glasgow School of Art from 1893 to 1895 and probably taking Charles Gourlay's classes at Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. At some point before the First World War he visited Canada to study the building industry in North America. The business had become Andrew Mickel & Co by about 1913.
Mickel enlisted with the Royal Engineers in 1914. After joining with Mactaggart, Mickel did not act as architect again, although he probably contributed ideas to the design of the architect employed by that company.
