Basic Biographical Details

Name: Henry ('Harry') McFarlane Bunch
Designation:
Born: August 1927
Died: 1 November 2010
Bio Notes: Hentry McFarlane Bunch, always known as Harry, was born in August 1927. He began to study architecture at Edinburgh College of Art but left before completing the course, choosing instead to take up a place in the office of his good friend, the conservation architect Robert Hurd. He stayed with Robert Hurd & Partners after Hurd's death in 1963, and was a partner by the 1970s, remaining with the same practice after its amalgamation with that of L A Rolland & Partners as The Hurd Rolland Partnership in 1988.

Outgoing and yet self-effacing, his affable nature enabled him to build strong relationships with colleagues and associates, and helped his efforts at persuading developers of the value of conservation. He had an ability to visualise opportunities and produce sketches at remarkable speed.

On 10 November 1992 (possibly the day before his retirement) he was elected Affiliate of the EAA in recognition of his distinguished contribution to the art of architecture, the first affiliate to be elected to the EAA since the war.

His last years were spent with his wife May in the Algarve, Portugal, where he died on 1 November 2010.
