Bio Notes: Thomas ('Tom') George Humphreys was born in China, the son of a chartered accountant and spent his early childhood years there, coming to school in Britain at the age of ten to complete his education. He was articled to a firm of accountants in Sevenoaks. He saw active service during the Second World War as a gunner with the Royal Artillery in North Africa, Sicily and Italy.

After the war he studied for the Diploma in Architecture at Dunelm. He was elected ARIBA in 1953. He then worked for a period in London. He moved to work in Canada and it was rhere that he met and married his wife Jean who was taking a post-graduate course in nursing. During the later 1950s they returned to Britain and settled in Helensburgh in 1959.

Tom worked for some time for Noad & Wallace. They were at that time involved with the development of Ferniegair Estate and Tom became project architect. He was responsible for the group of five linked houses, completed in 1959. He was elected ARIAS the following year.

From the mid-1960s he was a partner in the firm which had previously been Hislop & Welsh, becoming Hislop, Welsh & Humphreys. He practised in Helensburgh from the early 1970s, though the main practice address was 124 St Vincent Street, Glasgow.

Tom retired in 1978. He still took an active interest in architectural matters and was a member of the local Civic Society, Saltire Society and Art Club. He was involved in campaigns to retain good buildings in Helensburgh. He was also an accomplished watercolourist.

He died after a short illness on 5 December 1998 at which time he was a retired ARIAS. He was survived by his wfe Jean and their sons and granchildren.
