Basic Biographical Details

Name: Robbie & Wellwood
Designation:
Born:
Died:
Bio Notes: Henry Pearce Robbie commenced his articles with Mills & Shepherd of Dundee in April 1919. He studied at the Glasgow School of Architecture, and won the Alexander Thomson travelling scholarship in 1925 which enabled him to travel to Italy from May to July the following year. He received his diploma from the Glasgow School of Architecture in July 1928 and was admitted ARIBA later that year, his proposers being John Watson, his former employer John Donald Mills, and William Brown Whitie, with whom he was working at the time.

In 1930 Pearce Robbie left Whitie's office and moved to Dundee. Around that time he joined the practice of Findlay & Stewart which then became Findlay Stewart & Robbie. In the same year, 1930, Pearce Robbie succeeded Vernon Constable as lecturer in architecture at the Technical College.

James Findlay died in March 1943, and Nelson T Stewart in 1948, leaving Pearce Robbie as sole partner. The firm was based throughout in the former office of John Murray Robertson at 33 Albert Square, which Findlay had retained after Robertson's death. Pearce Robbie appears to have died prior to 1972 as he does not appear in the Dundee directories of that year.

By the early 1960s Robbie had formed a partnership with Martin M Wellwood. Some time after Robbie retired David G Leslie became a senior partner and the practice became Wellwood & Leslie but it still appeared as Robbie & Wellwood in 1985.

The practice gained a Saltire Society Housing mentions in 1975, 1976; a Saltire Society housing and group mentions in 1976; DoE Awards for Good Design in Housing in 1977 and 1978. In 1980 they won an RIBA Architectural Commendation Award.
