He studied at Glasgow School of Art for the diploma in architecture followed by a further qualification in Town Planning. He was elected ARIBA in 1950 and ARIAS in 1959. He joined Wylie Shanks & Wylie as an assistant, moving to Walter Underwood in 1960 and becoming a partner in 1964.
