Bio Notes: James MacFarlane Paton was born on 28 March 1928, the son of William Cochrane Paton, government servant, and his wife Isabella Macfarlane. He studied at Glasgow School of Art for the diploma in architecture followed by a further qualification in Town Planning. He was elected ARIBA in 1950 and ARIAS in 1959. He joined Wylie Shanks & Wylie as an assistant, moving to Walter Underwood in 1960 and becoming a partner in 1964.

He died at his home in Bearsden on 1 February 2003, survived by his wife Jessie Sheila McLeod Baird, a retired metallurgist and at least one son.
