Bio Notes: John Penman was born on 31 August 1899. From 1914-1918 he was articled to James Thomson, City Architect, Dundee during part of which he studied architecture and building subjects at Dundee Technical College and the School of Art (1915-19).

In 1919 he took a post as an assistant in the City Engineer's Office Dundee but in 1926 moved to Swansea as senior assistant in the Borough Surveyor's Office. During this period he travelled to London to take courses in architecture with L Stuart Stanley and C W Box. He graduated BSC from the University of London. He was later a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and perhaps therefore took classes in engineering. He was also a member of the Town Planning Institute. In 1930 he moved again this time to Workington, Cumberland as Borough Surveyor and Architect where he remained until 1939 when he secured the post of Burgh Surveyor, Master of Works and Architecture in Perth.

He was elected LRIBA in 1948, proposed by R Matthew Mitchell (for the Council of the RIBA), Alexander George Robertson Mackenzie and D Mickleton(?).

Penman died on 18 December 1974.
