Bio Notes: James Austen Bent was born on 14 August 1907. From February 1922 he was articled to F W Platt FSI, PPTPI, Housing Director, Manchester City, and continued under his successor Leonard Heywood ARIBA and his deputy R C H Livett, ARIBA. He studied at Manchester College of Technology from October 1925 to May 1933 and during the same period attended classes at Manchester Municipal School. From September 1929 until October the following year he studied design with Sir Bannister Fletcher. He sat the final RIBA exam in December 1933 and was elected ARIBA in 1934, his proposers being Alexander Godolphin Bond, Isaac Taylor and John Swarbrick. He was also an Associate Member of the Town Planning Institute.

During the early 1940s he worked for the Department of Health for Scotland where he was involved in postwar reconstruction preparations, focussing mainly on industrialised housing.

Sometime before 1950 he had secured the post of Chief Technical Officer and Assistant General Manager of the Scottish Special Housing Association, based in Edinburgh.

He retired before 1976 when he resigned from the RIBA at which point he would appear to have been living in Cheshire. He died between April and June 1980 at Stockport.
