Bio Notes: Ian Manson Thomson was born on 3 June 1927 at 4 Don Street, Woodside, Aberdeen, the son of Adam Addie Thomson, commercial clerk (later company secretary) amd his wife Margaret Elizabeth Horne. He studied for the Diploma at Aberdeen School of Architecture. He was elected ARIBA and ARIAS in 1954.

On 17 March 1956 Thomson married Elaine Frances Beaton, a bookkeeper, at the High Church, Hilton, Aberdeen.

With Thomas (Tom) Craig and Robin Donald in 1963 he established a practice in Aberdeen as Thomson Craig & Donald with an office at 59 Dee Street. The practice moved to Carden Terrace a year later. For a period prior to 1983 Angus Taylor was a partner, the practice name changing to Thomson, Taylor Craig & Donald. In 1979 David Miller was assumed into partnership, followed in 1980 by Alistair Hay and Charles Simpson and in 1984 by Donald Coutts and Frank Robertson. The practice had offices in Glasgow and Dingwall as well as Aberdeen by 1975.
