He was great-nephew of Patrick Hill Thoms, founder of the Thoms & Wilkie practice. He studied for the degree of BArch at Heriot Watt. He was elected ARIBA in 1973. (04117650). He formed a partnership with Brian Somerville in 19__. After the retirement of Somerville in 1982, the practice amalgamated with the Thoms & Wilkie practice which was still operating in Dundee with Douglas Nairn and J F Anderson as partners, the name changing to Thoms & Nairn. A year later, 1983, the Dundee office was closed.
