Basic Biographical Details Name: | John Bannerman | Designation: | | Born: | 3 June 1914 | Died: | c. 1960(?) | Bio Notes: | John Bannerman was born in Edinburgh on 3 June 1914, the son of Joseph Gordon McKay Bannerman, surveyor, and his wife Margaret Haggart. He attended evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College for five years from June 1931 whilst receiving practical training in unspecified offices. He took day classes for a further two years, otaining his diploma in June 1938 and passing the qualifying exam in Edinburgh in January 1939. He was admitted ARIBA on 12 December 1939, his proposers being John Jerdan, Thomas Forbes Maclennan and Frank Charles Mears. At the time of his application for admittance in the previous August, he was working for the British Aluminium Company at 9 Rosebery Crescent, Edinburgh.
By 1950 Bannerman was working for the Public Works Department in Pretoria, South Africa. He was registered with the South African Institute of Architects in 1951, later becoming a member of the Transvaal Institute. In 1959 he was recorded as a salaried member, meaning he was an employee rather than working on his own account. He is not listed in 1960 and it must be assumed that he died about that date. However he must have returned to the Public Works Department as he is recorded as working there in 1969.
